How to Apply for the Fresh Start Scholarship
Applying for a scholarship can feel like guesswork when a program is new. Here is exactly what the Fresh Start Scholarship application requires, in order, so nothing gets missed before the deadline.
Confirm You Meet the Eligibility Requirements
- Currently enrolled in or accepted to an accredited two-year, four-year, or trade institution
- Pursuing a degree or certification in emergency management, environmental science, construction management, civil engineering, public safety, disaster preparedness, or a related field
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- An original essay, 500 to 700 words, responding to the required prompt
- An unofficial academic transcript showing a 3.0 GPA or higher
- A letter of enrollment or acceptance from your institution
- Your full name and contact email address
Write the Essay
The prompt asks applicants to describe a community they have seen impacted by a natural or man-made disaster and explain how professionals in their field can help that community recover and rebuild more resiliently. Strong essays connect the applicant's specific area of study to concrete recovery work rather than speaking about disaster response in general terms. If your background includes a personal or professional connection to a disaster event, that context can make a stronger case than a hypothetical example.
Format the Submission Correctly
Applications go to scholarship@911restoration.com. The subject line has to follow this exact format: Fresh Start Scholarship [Spring/Fall] [Year] - [Your Full Name]. Submissions that don't follow the format may be harder for the review committee to track, so it's worth double-checking before hitting send.
Step 5: Submit Before the Deadline
| Cycle | Applications Open | Applications Close | Winners Announced | Funds Disbursed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 | July 15, 2026 | September 30, 2026 | November 1, 2026 | January 2027 |

What Happens After You Apply
Applications are reviewed by an independent selection committee through a community foundation partner, a 501(c)(3) public charity with no direct affiliation with 911 Restoration. Winners are chosen based on essay quality, understanding of community recovery, and alignment with the scholarship's eligible fields. All applicants hear back after the announcement date for their cycle. If selected, funds are paid directly to your school, not to you personally.
